Students in ACTION!
“Truth is like the stars; it does not appear except from behind the obscurity of night.” - Kahlil Gibran It has been a year since businessman Jose “Joey” De Venecia, III (JDV III) has blown the whistle on the bribery-ridden National Broadband Network (NBN) deal between the National government and a Chinese firm, ZTE. Next to the 2004 Hello Garci controversy, and other myriad of multi-billion cases that reek of corruption and anomaly, the issue on the NBN-ZTE deal further threatened the stability of the Arroyo administration by challenging its sincerity in governing according to the best interest of the people. The health science students, who were trained to attend to the holistic health of a person and a nation inductively, are acknowledging the relationship of politics and health. Faulty, irresponsible and one-sided policies catering to the interest of a few can cause the precipitation of health crises that are not only physiological but also psychological and moral. An exploitative government is the causative agent for the sickness and demoralization of the people. During clinical duties, the students can attest to the struggle of poor patients fighting off the burden of their semi-privitized hospital’s bill and their medicine’s inhumanely, unregulated price, all on top of thinking over their malignancies. The fight towards the attainment of the fundamental right of every human to health has become an undertaking of monstrous proportions because of policies that nurtured such hurdles. Tired of giving ‘palliative treatment’ to the sickness of the society by addressing only to the physiological sickness of the people, the students are now seeking and aspiring for the ultimate cure of the root of this social cancer. The Health Student’s Action (HSA) is an organization that strongly believes to the student's role and involvement in societal change. In diagnosing the country’s crisis much like diagnosing a patient’s condition, scientific assessment is needed to reach a valid and reliable information. Without this evidenced-based information, no sound intervention can be done. In gathering and seeking data for further analysis and in order to conclude what should the effective management be, the health students join the nation in seeking for the truth. Thus becoming an integral part of the collective action. With the initiative of the League of Health Science Students (LHSS), a Flores de Mayo para sa Katotohanan will be held on May 16, 2008, 4pm from Vito Cruz Taft.
